Electronic system design industry revenue soars

Double-digit growth observed across all product categories and regions

The Electronic System Design (ESD) industry experienced a significant revenue increase of 12 per cent in the first quarter of 2023, reaching $US3,951.1 million, according to the latest Electronic Design Market Data (EDMD) report released by the ESD Alliance, a SEMI Technology Community. The report also highlights a 12.7 per cent rise in the four-quarter moving average, reflecting sustained growth in the sector.

Walden C. Rhines, Executive Sponsor of the SEMI Electronic Design Market Data report, stated that the electronic design automation (EDA) industry achieved robust double-digit gains in Q1 2023, with substantial increases observed in all product categories and geographic regions. Notably, Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), IC Physical Design and Verification, Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module (PCB and MCM), and Services all recorded double-digit growth.

The companies tracked in the EDMD report employed a total of 57,696 individuals worldwide in Q1 2023, representing a notable 12.9 per cent increase compared to the Q1 2022 headcount of 51,093. Additionally, this marked a 4.5 per cent rise in employment figures compared to Q4 2022.

The EDMD report provides comprehensive revenue information, offering insights into various product and application categories as well as geographic breakdowns. The notable year-over-year changes in revenue by product and application category include:

  • Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE): Revenue rose by 15.1 per cent to $US1,434.1 million, with the four-quarter moving average increasing by 18.6 per cent.
  • IC Physical Design and Verification: Revenue surged by 24.6 per cent to $US675.8 million, while the four-quarter moving average for this category grew by 14.6 per cent.
  • Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module (PCB and MCM): Revenue increased by 25.6 per cent to $US368.4 million, with the four-quarter moving average rising by 15.7 per cent.
  • Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP): Revenue experienced a slight uptick of 0.4 per cent to $US1,330.6 million, and the four-quarter SIP moving average grew by 5.7 per cent.
  • Services: Revenue witnessed a substantial increase of 17.2 per cent to $US142.2 million, while the four-quarter Services moving average rose by 16.8 per cent.

The revenue by region saw the following year-over-year changes:

  • Americas: The largest reporting region by revenue, procured $US1,698.2 million worth of electronic system design products and services in Q1 2023, reflecting a 12.7 per cent increase. The four-quarter moving average for the Americas rose by 12.5 per cent.
  • Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA): Procurement in this region reached $US530.1 million, marking a significant 21.6 per cent increase. The four-quarter moving average for EMEA grew by 9.6 per cent.
  • Japan: The country’s procurement of electronic system design products and services increased by 4.3 per cent to $US272.7 million, and the four-quarter moving average for Japan rose by 2.3 per cent.
  • Asia Pacific (APAC): APAC procured $US1,449.9 million worth of electronic system design products and services in Q1 2023, indicating a 9.6 per cent increase. The four-quarter moving average for APAC grew by 16 per cent.

The EDMD report, formerly known as the Market Statistics Service, presents quarterly revenue data for the Electronic Design Automation (EDA), Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP), and services industries. The report is compiled by SEMI, with contributions from both public and private companies. The data is segmented by product category and geographic region, providing valuable insights into the industry’s performance and trends.
